Ukraine has seen a sharp rise in the incidence of pertussis (whooping cough). Compared to 2023, there was a 20.2-fold increase. In the first three months of this year, 1006 cases (969 children) were registered.
Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella Pertussis. It is characterised by a hacking cough that can be so intense that it can lead to complications and even death, especially in infants. Whooping cough is transmitted by airborne droplets from person to person - by coughing, sneezing or even talking.
What to do to avoid getting whooping cough/pertussis:
1. VACCINATION
The main means of preventing pertussis is vaccination. According to the national vaccination schedule, children should be vaccinated against pertussis at the age of 2, 4, 6 and 18 months. The level of pertussis vaccination coverage in Ukraine as a whole is extremely insufficient and amounts to 55.9% for children aged 1 year and older. So, follow the vaccination schedule and get vaccinated.
2. HYGIENE
Use of drip (in addition to standard) protection measures. Post-exposure chemoprophylaxis is recommended for people who have been in contact with a sick person.
3. AVOIDANCE OF CONTACT. ISOLATION
Hospitalisation in a single room/ward is recommended, if this is not possible - cohort placement (cohort isolation).
